How Much Should You Tip?
Tipping customs vary by country and service type. In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurants; 15% for average service, 20% for good service, 25%+ for exceptional. In Europe, rounding up or 10% is typical.
Calculating a Tip
Tip Amount = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100. On a $85 bill at 18%: $85 × 0.18 = $15.30 tip, total = $100.30. If splitting between 4 people: $100.30 ÷ 4 = $25.08 each.
Tip on Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax Amount
Many etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, not the full bill. If your food is $80 and tax brings it to $88, tip 20% on $80 = $16.
