What Is an Exponent?

An exponent (or power) tells you how many times a number — called the base — is multiplied by itself. Written as bⁿ, it means b × b × … × b (n times). Example: 2¹⁰ = 1,024.

Rules of Exponents

• Product rule: b^m × bⁿ = b^m+n
• Quotient rule: b^m ÷ bⁿ = b^m−n
• Power rule: (b^m)ⁿ = b^m×n
• Zero exponent: b⁰ = 1 (for any b ≠ 0)
• Negative exponent: b⁻ⁿ = 1/bⁿ

Large numbers are written in scientific notation using powers of 10. For example, 6,000,000 = 6 × 10⁶. Exponents are essential in physics, chemistry, and computing.
