What Is an Exponent?
An exponent (or power) tells you how many times a number — called the base — is multiplied by itself. Written as bn, it means b × b × … × b (n times). Example: 210 = 1,024.
Rules of Exponents
- Product rule: bm × bn = bm+n
- Quotient rule: bm ÷ bn = bm−n
- Power rule: (bm)n = bm×n
- Zero exponent: b0 = 1 (for any b ≠ 0)
- Negative exponent: b−n = 1/bn
Scientific Notation
Large numbers are written in scientific notation using powers of 10. For example, 6,000,000 = 6 × 106. Exponents are essential in physics, chemistry, and computing.
Fractional Exponents & Roots
A fractional exponent like b1/2 equals the square root of b. Similarly, b1/3 is the cube root. Our exponent calculator handles all real-number exponents.
